January: AKA: Written words from a winter-wimp...

I've had my share of winters
Of days as cold as night
Of chills that stab like splinters
Blue fingers numbed by frostbite
I've seen such Januarys
The type to make December mild
Sleet and snow and storms so dreary
And downpours of rain unreconciled
Days so dark but pale
Ice so hard yet frail-
I've seen so many cold days
Black nights when stars blink blue
Reminiscences of the ice age
When glaciers tipped the world askew
Here in the midst of storm-smitten days
Amidst fleeting fascination for snowflakes
Here in the middle of snowfall
Another dawn looks a lot like nightfall
Maybe tomorrow will dawn brighter
Maybe the snow will shine whiter
Maybe the tundra will crack and break
And chill will add frost to the frozen lake
Maybe the dew will crystallize
And I'll be waiting-
Waiting for the ice to melt before my eyes
The damp will dry and the chill will lift
Frozen surfaces dissolve to shards adrift
The plants will awake and bloom brightly
While sunbeams touch down to earth lightly
Sparrows will sing while butterflies soar
And the cold of January will be forgotten-
Making dark days so pale momentarily no more
